What happened to Magic Seaweed? ›

Generally speaking the perfect size for beginners is 1 to 2ft. For intermediates: 2-4ft waves are best as it gives you more face of the wave to progress your skills on. You should keep an eye on the 'Swell Period', because it's a lot more indicative of the actual wave size (see the next point).

Just as with wind direction, the swell direction tells you where the swell is coming from, not the direction it is moving. On the East Coast, for example, an east swell isn't moving towards the east. That would mean it is literally heading away from the coastline, like a backward wave.

There is a pronounced difference in temperature and salinity between the surface and deep zones of the Pacific. The deep zone, which contains about 80 percent of the ocean's volume, has relatively stable temperature and salinity patterns; its average temperature is 38.3 °F (3.5 °C).

Here's the simplified wave face scale and the corresponding body height: 1 ft = Ankle-high. 2 ft = Knee-high. 3ft = Waist-high.

The best tides to surf in can vary depending on the location, but in general, mid to high tides are ideal for beginners as they provide more forgiving waves. However, experienced surfers may prefer lower tides as they produce faster and more challenging waves.

Surf forecasts often display wind direction in degrees/bearing. Surfing is usually best when it's wind-free. A surfer values glassy conditions―a calm surface of the water without gusts of wind―the most, but tough surfers learn to manage even the worst conditions.

Offshore winds are the best kind of wind to have when surfing next to no wind of course. Offshore winds blow from land into the water creating very smooth and well-groomed waves that can typically take a barrel shape.
