FAQs

July 15, 2024 - Derecho Brings Widespread Wind Damage & Tornadoes? ›

July 15, 2024: Derecho Produces Widespread Wind Damage and Numerous Tornadoes. The National Weather Service continues to add tornadoes to the list from July 15. The severe weather breaks the previous daily record for tornadoes. The record was 22 and now it's at least 31.

Can a derecho cause a tornado? ›

Derechos move rapidly in the direction of movement of their associated storms, similar to an outflow boundary (gust front), except that the wind remains sustained for a greater period of time (often increasing in strength after onset), and may reach tornado and hurricane-force winds.

How rare is a derecho storm? ›

They are impressive to see both on the ground and from the sky. Derechos are most common in the Midwestern United States, but are still fairly rare. You might see a derecho about once a year there. They can occasionally be found all the way up into the Northeast.

Why is it called derecho? ›

"Derecho" is a Spanish word meaning "direct" or "straight ahead;" Hinrichs coined it to distinguish straight-line wind damage from that produced by tornadoes.

What kind of damage is most common with a derecho? ›

Although a derecho can produce destruction similar to the strength of tornadoes, the damage typically is directed in one direction along a relatively straight swath. As a result, the term "straight-line wind damage" sometimes is used to describe derecho damage.

What is worse, a tornado or derecho? ›

Gusts up to 130 mph have been recorded for derechos, which is equal to an EF2 tornado. Derechos must extend either sporadically or continuously more than 400 miles in length, and 60 miles in width, to qualify.

How do you tell if a storm is a derecho? ›

A Derecho is a very long lived and damaging thunderstorm. A storm is classified as a derecho if wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles and has wind gusts of at least 58 mph or greater along most of the length of the storm's path. For more on derechos visit the Storm Prediction Center's derecho page.

What states get derechos? ›

During the cool season, derechos are most likely to occur from eastern Texas into the southeastern states. Although derechos are extremely rare west of the Great Plains, isolated derecho events have occurred in the interior portions of the western United States, especially during spring and early summer.

When was the last derecho in the US? ›

What part of the United States has the greatest potential for experiencing a derecho? ›

Derechos are widespread damaging wind events from clusters of severe thunderstorms. They are most common in late spring and summer. Parts of the Great Plains and Midwest experience derechos most often.

What is the nickname for derecho? ›

There's a reason why a common nickname for a derecho is an 'inland hurricane'. The winds produced by these events can be just as powerful and damaging as those experienced during a tropical storm or hurricane.

What is another word for derecho? ›

Derecho means both “right” and “straight” in Spanish and comes from Latin dīrēctus, “straightened,” the source of English direct and adroit (through French droit). The Latin word for “right,” however, is dexter, which survives in ambidextrous.

Where is a derecho most likely to happen? ›

During the cool season (September through April), derechos are relatively infrequent but are most likely to occur from east Texas into the southeastern states.

Can a derecho destroy a house? ›

Damage surveys following derecho events have shown that within large areas of overall damage are much smaller pockets of intense damage. It is not uncommon for one house to be nearly destroyed while adjacent houses have relatively minor damage.

What was the worst derecho in history? ›

The June 2012 Mid-Atlantic and Midwest derecho was one of the deadliest and most destructive fast-moving severe thunderstorm complexes in North American history.

What does a derecho look like on radar? ›

Radar shows a "bow echo"

A bow echo forms when the strong winds of the derecho push clusters of storms out in front of one another, the shape of a bow. Along the line of the bow echo, individual storms can cause significant damage, and the fast-moving band can cover hundreds of miles quickly.

Can a wind storm turn into a tornado? ›

Because tornadoes are caused by rotating storms and straight-line winds come from thunderstorms that don't rotate, straight-line winds do not typically turn into tornados. You are only likely to have one or the other depending on the weather system.

What wind speed causes a tornado? ›

The Fujita Scale

F1Moderate tornado73-112 mph

What is the difference between a microburst and a derecho? ›

A typical derecho consists of numerous microbursts, downbursts, and downburst clusters. By definition, if the wind damage swath extends more than 240 miles (about 400 kilometers) and includes wind gusts of at least 58 mph (93 km/h) or greater along most of its length, then the event may be classified as a derecho.
